Following Peterborough City Council planners approval for redevelopment plans to the Werrington Centre in Peterborough, the S.106 Agreement for the development has now been approved by Tesco, the City Council and the Howard Group.
The refurbishment of the Centre, which includes a new 75,000 sq ft Tesco superstore, a pub/restaurant, additional retail units and new public spaces, is part of the initial phase of comprehensive proposals by HPG Developments, the development arm of the Howard Group based in Cambridge.
The S.106 Agreement will in time provide a new community car park for around 100 cars, new roundabout, real-time public transport information displays, CCTV system, public art and a recycling scheme. The master plan for the Centre's regeneration includes a new row of shops and new public square. The Ploughman pub will also be re-located to a plot adjacent to Tesco as a purpose built pub restaurant.
HPG Developments Director, William Jewson said; "We are delighted that the S.106 Agreement has been agreed. This has meant that the planning consent has now been granted and we will be working closely with the City Council and other stakeholders to deliver the first phase of this major project. We have been working for three years to bring about improvement to the Centre and we are now at the start of delivering these plans. The redevelopment will provide a much needed boost to the area and will be of great benefit to the locality."
The first phase of development is part of a wider plan for the regeneration of the whole district centre which will be considered in liaison with other landowners and stakeholders. Future phases are likely to include additional homes, offices, shops, leisure and health facilities.
